About
Joanna Norman 1976
As a visual artist my investigations are broad, involving colour theory, abstraction and geometry as well as movement, atmosphere and nature. My materials and methods range from traditional drawing, painting and sewing to digital mediums. The works are responses to my surroundings both the natural world and man-made and as well as seeking out specific subject matter, I often aim to make the best use of the visual resource available at a given location and situation. I am influenced by many contemporary and 20th century artists often combining diverse styles to produce one piece, an example being a geometric seascape.
I grew up in Barnsley, in the north of England and studied art at secondary school. I went on to study Social Psychology at Loughborough University and after graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree, pursued a career in system support living in New Zealand for several years before later returning to the UK.
I completed BA Fine Art modules at Sheffield College and Open College of the Arts in Drawing and Painting and studied towards Photography and Digital, and Art History. In 2023 I was awarded funding from Arts Council England under the Developing Your Creative Practice (DYCP) scheme.
This website showcases the diverse subject matter and materials I work with but may not represent a complete catalogue of projects.
